Why That Weird Cherry Trick For Sleep Might Actually Work

Ever notice how the best sleep advice usually comes from random old wives’ tales? Warm milk before bed. A glass of wine. Counting backwards from a hundred.

Turns out one of those old tricks might actually have science behind it, and it’s all about cherries.

There’s something going around called the 30 second cherry trick for sleep, and at first it sounds like just another wellness fad. Stick with me for a second though, because this one’s different.

Researchers at State University decided to test it properly. They picked adults over 50 who had trouble sleeping, the kind where you’re tossing and turning at least three nights a week. Some drank Montmorency tart cherry juice twice a day, morning and night, for two weeks. Others drank a placebo that looked and tasted almost identical.

After switching the two groups and measuring everyone’s sleep in an actual sleep lab, not just a smartwatch guessing, the results came in. The cherry juice group slept an extra 84 minutes a night on average. That’s over an hour of extra sleep, just from drinking the right juice at the right times.

Why would cherries do that? Montmorency tart cherries are one of the few natural food sources of melatonin, the hormone your brain uses to control your sleep cycle. As you get older, your body naturally makes less of it. Drinking the juice basically tops that back up.

Dr. Collins, who led the study, pointed out that insomnia is really common in older adults, but most people will rather avoid sleep medication if they have another option. Cherry juice gives them exactly that.
